Of research challenge

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

I have never expect I would be in the academic field before.

I have a strong background in education field, as both of my parents were former teacher, 3 of my sisters are teachers and another 1 going to be a lecturer. Before graduating, I was expecting to work in a private company where I would not practice my economics side, but rather my finance major.

I seek position in lots of companies in banking and finance industry, but to no luck. I have been to many interviews and done my best but I didnt get any of the job.

My interest has always been in economics though it is REAL hard to score it in exam, because there is no black and white areas but there is always grey areas in economics. But, it is quite hard to find a job within the economics scope. Maybe that is why I choose to apply jobs in finance and banking sector instead.

After several months of jobless life, Allah has grant me the best job indeed, not the one that I want but the one that I need the most. The experience of being a teacher for three months has deepen my interest in education field, cause I love to teach but I always think my result is not good enough to apply for a lecturer position.

Why I didn't choose to become a teacher? That is the question that need to be answered in another blog post.

***

I think I am quite workaholic for now. Sometimes I feel like I have no life since I always think about work and my research for almost 24/7. My brain keep on thinking non-stop about the research.

But I believe in 'no pain no gain'.. Life is all about choosing. It is either you choose to enjoy first and suffer later or suffer now and enjoy later. For me I would choose the latter so I can relax in my golden age.

I also believe that I have to work hard from now on since I have no commitment currently. Later when I have my own family, I would slow down a bit so that I can have some time for my family. I respect those who afford to become a housewife, but for now I am not planning into it. I have my own ambition and dreams which I have to achieve it.

***
Currently, I am doing analysis of essays submitted by the students. That is my project with my boss. It is basically qualitative study for experience of the students in the zoo. It sounds easy but the reality it is not. You need to read carefully and go deep into the writer's thinking before you can categorise it according to the theory that you have chose.

There are 37 participants altogether with the essays ranging from 1000-2000 words in length for each. It takes me around 30 minutes to finish 1 essay. On average I can finish 8 essays per day since I have some other jobs that I need to fulfill besides the analysis.

I will write my journey in research in this blog. Insya Allah

Among the challenges that I faced up until today:
#1: finding the right theory for my analysis
#2: once the analysis part started, you can easily get confuse with the theory and categorisation
#3: confuse and confuse, that is what I am facing right now

But my boss said, just trust yourself. Because as I am doing the analysis alone for now, I need to have the courage to trust myself. He can only guide me through but not doing the analysis with me. So, I need to learn to be more confident and rely on myself instead of others.

***

I have never expect the research to be this hard. But I believe I can do it. I will do it. I will be able to publish it ASAP.

I am pushing myself off the limit, and trying to focus to the analysis. Fast working pace is not something that I need to try, but I really need to work on.

Today my boss reminds me that I need to aim high. Always aim high. Insya Allah.

My short term dream is to publish at least 5 papers before I start my master degree journey.

and in the long term, I dream to be the editor of top journals -- the highest achievement in the lecturer's career. Plus I want to contribute to the society as much as I contribute the knowledge to the academic world.
insya Allah

may Allah eases the journey. Amin.

I will keep updating, though I am not really sure if this blog has a reader.

Izzah.

Welcoming the year of change

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim

My new resolutions for my life in 2014 will be focusing on 4 things that I need to balance, which are;
  1. Family and friends
  2. Work - research
  3. Tarbiah
  4. Health
Maybe I should include writing blog as one of my resolution so that I could always look at the memories of the past. I think I should write about my journey in this research thing and the challenge of becoming a researcher.

I am still learning to be a better person than I am today. Indeed I am struggling in a long-time-endless journey called life, and I am a learner.  For now, the number 2 resolution item is taking the biggest part of my daily life (which is not good) but the feeling of inferiority always keep me working. Sometimes I lose my confidence in doing something, and I feel loss. But there will always something/someone who always be there to support me. Alhamdulilah I am so grateful to be surrounded by beautiful people with beautiful hearts.

I guess Steve Jobs's famous quote "Stay hungry, stay foolish" has some effect to myself to some extent.

I have made mistake for the past few years, but I promise not to repeat that mistake again. I will strive hard and do my best for my future. I believe everyone deserves to have a second chance in life. Insya Allah do the best and leave the rest to Him.

***

2014 would be challenging for me, since I would have to work under 2 different bosses with 2 different needs and projects. But I keep thinking positively that there is always room for me to learn something from these two different boss.

In life, we would never know that we could fall in the deepest point of our life at anytime. The job-hunting has ruined my confidence level with those hurdles and pressures from the surrounding environment. Become a jobless for months is not a great thing to remember at all. But Alhamdulillah praise to Allah, I met a kind-hearted person who is currently my boss. He accept me for whatever qualification that I have and gives me back my confidence. He gives me a lot of room for self-development and learning. Insya Allah

Among the resolution of new year, is to improve the writing (academically or santai). I think need to stop here since I have lots to do. Going back to home to meet my newly born nephew - Umar and my family. I have to go back to regain my energy  or else I will be lemau.

Insya Allah I will update again

Xoxox.

Accessible tourism?

 Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

It has been a long time since I wrote my last post here. So many things happened for the past several months and I am still trying and learning to balance my life.

Study-->Work as a teacher-->Graduation-->_____--> RA. This is the timeline for the past 10 months.

So here I am writing the blog (again!), hopefully the momentum will last long since I would need to practice more of my writing skills. Alhamdulilah, tonight luckily I can still remember the password and email for this blog, cause usually if I did not log in for such a long period of time I would easily forget the username and password that I used. Usually I will keep on trying until the Google lock my account and I need to answer those security questions, which I usually won't be able to answer it correctly. Such a miserable me.

I will try to update on my graduation when my mood for writing come back later.

Anyways, I just started working last month of September as a research assistant in one of Research University. Basically, the topics that I am working with is anything about tourism. From adventure tourism to spiritual tourism, and now I am reading on accessible tourism. It is very interesting in the sense that little studies have been done to address the issue of accessible tourism. In this post, I would like to share something related to accessible tourism which I find it interesting to know, especially for the policy-makers and also the service providers.

What is accessible tourism?

Accessible tourism is when everyone is able to travel anywhere that they wish to visit regardless of their disabilities. There are 3 types of disabilities, namely: physical limitations, sensory disabilities and persons with activity limitations.

Physical limitations: limited mobility (wheelchair user)
Sensory disabilities: blind/visually impaired or hearing impaired
Persons with activity limitations: persons who may encounter difficulties in terms of mobility or activity in both everyday situations or while travelling—this includes persons suffering temporarily from the accident effect, parents with prams or baby carriages, travelers with heavy luggage, families with small children or older persons.

By referring to Germany (this paper focuses on Germany), accessible built environment is a crucial requirement for around 10% of the population, a necessity for approx. 30 to 40% and comfortable for 100%.

Hence it is crucially important for the government and stakeholders to work on assuring tourism is made accessible to everyone because of economic prospects and social responsibility.

Here I would like to share what is the basic requirements that would represent the basis for an accessible tourism for everyone. There are four main pillars of an accessible holiday for all: information, service, mobility and ability to experience. These pillars would not only apply to disabled community travelers, but also travelers in general.

Information: The access to all important information when planning and taking on holiday. The components of information is as follows:
  • Simplicity: Information is easily found
  • Broad information: Information is available on the entire service chain
  • Clarity: The design and terminology used is familiar and easily comprehensible
  • Reliability: The information is verified and reliable
  • Accessibility: The information as well as the information offices on location are accessible to persons with disabilities
Service: Recognition as a target group in its own right
  •  Friendly, easy interaction
  • Competent, qualified contact persons
  • Customised solutions and assistance
Mobility: Ability to move around the destination independently
  • Accessibility in the public domain
  • Accessible transport infrastructure and local public transport
  • Accessibility of tourism facilities and attractions;ability to move around at these facilities and attractions
Ability to experience: Ability to experience the range of tourism services at the holiday destination

  • Accessible accommodation and dining establishments
  • Access to characteristic regional and local sites(e.g. in a seaside resort, an accessible beach)
  • Access to cultural and leisure facilities and services

In the destinations, these four pillars of accessible Tourism for All must be taken into consideration along the entire service chain and implemented by means of relevant measures. Only then will it be possible for all persons to enjoy a largely independent holiday.

The tourism is a right for everyone to travel and enjoy the tourism. But if the tourism is not made accessible, how are these people with activity limitations going to travel, especially traveling independently?

Before writing this, I was actually hoping for a betterment in my hometown in terms of tourism sector.

Currently, I believe the tourism sector in Kelantan is largely underdeveloped. This can be seen from lack of facilities, information, and marketing primarily. From my previous experience with a tourist from France that I met near KB Mall, the map that the tourist asked me was not reliable at all and I bet it was not updated for a decade that even a Kelantanese (me) could not figure it out. This example proves that the information is not reliable and makes it hard for the tourist to have a good experience of their journey.

Tourism has the potential to be developed into a sector which contributes a large amount of income to the state government and also to the federal government. I believe with proper planning and cooperation between local government, federal government, service providers and local people would make tourism development in Kelantan successful to attract more tourist and travelers in the future.

I sincerely hope more signs of disability access in our beloved country will present in the future. This kind of facilities provided by the government will not only benefited to local disabled community, but also to the foreigners and make Malaysia as one of the leading destinations for accessible tourism.

I need to sleep now or else I would be very sleepy at work tomorrow.

Malaysia: safe and sound.

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim..

Alhamdulillah.. thumma alhamdulillah..

FOR GOOD.

Sedih, Allah sahaja yang tahu. Bila mana orang bertanya, bila nak balik semula dan aku menjawab, "dah tak balik semula.." sebab dah habis belajar.. Ada satu perasaan sedih menyelinap diri ni sebenarnya..

Syukur aku panjatkan hanya pada Allah, kerana memberikan nikmat berjaya menghabiskan 3 tahun degree. Alhamdulillah..

Alhamdulillah. Sudah 4 hari bergelar graduan dari University of New South Wales (officially). Pemegang Bachelor of Commerce  majoring in Finance and Business Economics.

Sebelum balik for good, banyak sungguh dugaan Allah bagi.

Insya Allah will update again soon. :)

Internet oh internet..

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim..

So, not preferred.

p/s: PRAY FOR GAZA..

Post-degree?

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim..

Alhamdulillah.. All praises to Allah for making every single thing goes smoothly.

Today 12/11/12, I have completed my 3 years course Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Business Economics and Finance in University of New South Wales.

My first degree ended with final examination for Interest Rate Risk Management. The paper was tough since it does not involve lots of calculation like the previous mid-semester exam. This time around, the questions focused on theoretical part rather than calculations. It is easier to score the exact calculation problem than the theoretical questions because it needs much deeper understanding to tackle such question.

The exam went smoothly for the first 2 hours but in the last 1 hour (total duration: 3 hrs), I think I lost my momentum and I felt like I could not think of it anymore (plus I really have no idea what the questions were asking about). So, I just 'tembak' the questions that I don't know. Luckily there are only 2 subjective questions that worth 9 marks, and the other 41 questions are all MCQ. :)

I'm just praying and hoping that we (me and my friends) could pass all those subjects for this semester. I think everyone was freaking out about this semester's subjects. Especially the IRR, because the syllabus is kinda hard to digest and compute. Tawakkal sudah sekarang ni.. :)

Options?

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

3 minggu silibus options, nak termuntah2 dah rasanya sebab tak suka plus options ni memang susah nak paham and hadam..

Hurm, semoga Allah permudahkan exam final nanti. Amin.

Sebelum pening, kita berehat dulu sekejap dua kejap then sambung few pages then kalau tension kita teriak sekejap then sambung lagi then makan chips then makan chocolate then masak apa2 then sambung then tido. Cycle exam paper tak betul.

Sapa2 yang baca ni plsss doakan for my killer papers (politics, govt. and economics & IRR).aminamin
